The guy describes the horror of war and how his legs were blown off and he had to return home a cripple!

Is there another way to look at it?

Ooh, I like flogging molly.
But I haven't heard that song.

I see it as a story of hope and courage, though all the horrible things were going on the band still played on.

"...and the young people ask me
'what are they marching for?'
And I ask myself the same question..."

and another one in the song

"...but year after year
their numbers get fewer
some day no one will march there at all..."

those are lyrics of hopelessness.
