Heh, yes, I have that book as well, and it's a lovely piece of work. Anyway...

Like Pythongirl so aptly explained, the story was Palin, but the actual sketch was Cleese/Chapman. In the early episodes, you can tell which team wrote which sketch, because the ones that are very verbose and set in mundane places like an office or a shop are Cleese/Chapman fabrications. The scenic ones or the sketches that tend to be a bit more off-the-wall then usual are Palin/Jones. Apparently later on they began to emulate each other's styles, but it's a safe enough method for the early stuff.

I read somewhere that eric idle's sketches often included long, complicated dialog with one hilarous punchline at the end. This is what led me to believe he wrote the dirty knife sketch.... one of my favourites. can anyone confirm this?
