Many of you know this wisdom from the meaning of life, and what did I find in an article of the New York Times of 5.1.2006?

A comment by the (IMO) populist conservative Theodore Dalrymple:
'''To the hat, or rather to the lack of one is to be traced the source of all our ill-deportment,'' Mr. Dalrymple wrote. ''Bare heads, or heads accoutred in the wrong kind of headgear, cause our want of self-respect, and therefore our want of respect for others. What we need, therefore, is more hats: proper ones, from cloth caps to trilbies, homburgs, bowlers and toppers.'' In Mr. Dalrymple's opinion it is more difficult to behave badly in a proper hat, ''and how much easier to be polite in one.'''

So? Prescient Terry Gilliam? The hat as the clue to the moral meaning of life?

lol good one!!

The Meaning of Life is not 42 (that's the ultimate answer to the question of Life the Universe, and everything), it is the thing Palin says at the end of MOL.

Oh - another thread on the subject of hats. Interesting. I already wrote a few paragraps in a similar thread, which in total ended up being a little longer than first expected, a couple of days ago. However, as I more or less unconsciously wrote those lines about hat(s), I obviously have a certain interest for the topic. I tried to bring up a problem or three (perhaps even more) which could be associated with hats. For instance, if the household got only one hat, and you have an animal - should the person, or the animal (or in the most extreme extend; both) wear the hat? Such dillemmas. Now, however, I think it is time to move on. Same subject, new ideas. What else is there to discuss about hats?

Well, how about a few immediate thoughts. Imagine you are a composer. Is there any reason to believe that your work will end up better if you compose it wearing a hat? If you have specific ideas on how wearing a hat affects your overall presence and attitude, it may make a difference. One might consider oneself as a better (yeah, really) and more dignified person solely because of your "head decoration". As a result, your confidence will raise, which again will let your compositional skills to improve, as you open up your mind, and at least think that you are a little better than if you were not wearing a hat. This way, new - and potentially greater - musical ideas may arrive at your thought center, ideas which may or may not (probably not! (for the sake of supporting the nature of the hat and its affection on people's minds)) have arrived if you simply dropped the hat.

Now, of course the hat may lead to annoyance in some situations. If you're practicing a certain phrase on your instrument in order to perfect it, you'd probably be annoyed if your hat kept sliding down your forehead covering your eyes. This would be very disturbing, and you'd have to move it up X times in order to "recover". However, the best attitude towards such a problem is to disregard the abilities of the hat creator, and
just blame this particular hat's nature. A hat should be created with a clear focus on style and sensibility.

I'll let the hat discussion live on, and probably return with additional insights in the future, as I hopefully obtain fresh ideas after reading other hat fanatics' or fantasts' comments on the subject.
