HEY GUYS

While we're sort of on the subject, I thought I'd fit this in and not pollute the place with another pointless thread. I have a question for the british part of the forum.

The Pythons made fun of stereotypes a bunch(chartered accountants, talk show hosts, news anchors and whatnot). There's this one character type that keeps popping up, but I can't associate it with anything.

The man with the suspenders, napkin on his head, trouser legs pulled up and a strange obsession with bricks. Is this a caricature of some group down there in England, or just one of Gilliam's drug-induced hallucinations made real?

I think what you are referring to is a certain Mr Gumby. As far as I'm aware there is not a social or occupational group in England which are at all similar to this creation. I think it is just possibly referring to remarkably stupid people. But wasn't it created by John Cleese and then made into an animation? Or the other way around?

actually, i just found that. should give you some more information.

The look of the Gumby originated from TG seeing someone on holiday dressed a little like that.

There is a certain type of British man who seems to wear that sort of clothing to the beach (but not the wellies - they tend to wear socks and sandals instead). I think they just went will the look when they came up with their Gumby character.
