To be honest I'm not sure it was either. From the info out there, it seems likely that the basic idea for the sketch (a dodgy shop assistant/ mechanic/ etc) was a Palin-Jones thing, but the specific idea that it was a dead parrot being complained about was a Cleese-Chapman thing (MP has been on record as saying it was GC who suggested a Norwegian Blue as the parrot in question).

Maybe the parrot wrote the sketch, and then he got assassinated by the store clerk the night before the parrot's owner came into the shop with the deceased parrot. Does that make any sense at all????

Hello! Just wanted to let you know that the Parrot sketch was a Cleese/Chapman thing. I'm reading the Python biography at the moment (the one written by the Pythons) and John Cleese says that Michael Palin was telling him one day about a car that he took to his local garage. Michael said that he kept telling the guy that he was having trouble with it, and all the guy kept saying was that it was a lovely car, lovely car-and if you ever have trouble with it, bring it in. Michael was like, 'I am having trouble with it,that's why I brought it!' But he just couldn't get through to the bloke-he was one of those people who wouldn't take a complaint seriously.

So John went off after hearing Michael's story and wrote a sketch for their TV show (How To Irritate People) with Graham Chapman (you'll find that Cleese and Chapman mostly wrote together, while Michael Palin wrote with Terry Jones and Eric Idle usually wrote on his own), about a guy returning a second hand car.

About a year later (around 1969), when they were writing for Python, Cleese and Chapman agreed that the car sketch was too hackneyed, so they starting writing about a pet shop and said, 'What would be funnier, a dog or a parrot?' So there you go.

I hope that answers your question. I'd recommend that everyone read The Pythons: Autobiography by The Pythons-it's fantastic. It gives you a great inside story on all the boys (including Terry Gilliam)-where all the ideas came from etc-makes for brilliant reading if you're Python-mad like me!![:D]

Is your biography a really thick and heavy book with a silver background and the words "Autobiography of the Pythons" on the cover? It also has a picture of a soldier with enormous legs and feet on the cover too. If you do, then I have the same one as you guys! But I bought mine last year. I haven't actually read it because I've been busy with school and work and family business, but I still love it. And GOD, you should go get one, just so you know what's going on. [:)]
